Emperor Spotted Newt (Neurergus kaiseri)

Also known as the Luristan Newt or Kaiser’s Spotted Newt, the emperor spotted newt is a species of newt found only in the southern Zagros Mountains in Iran. Like most salamanders this species is often found in or near streams, however water is absent in its habitat for more than half of a year. During this time the salamander undergoes a process called Aestivation which is a type of dormancy. Unfortunately due to habitat loss and animal trade this salamander is critically endangered and it is unknown if there are any wild populations left.
